I will try to keep this short,
sorry! "Willie G."Davidson, the grandson of the original
"Davidson" came to work for the factory in 1968. This Super
Glide project was his very first design project for the company.
He went out to see what everyone was doing in the custom world.
Stripping bikes down to a bare minimum...not a bad concept as
far as I'm concerned. He took a 74 inch "Bagger" or an "Old
Man's" bike and tore off all the touring garbage, Fairing,
saddle bags, 5 gallon tanks and of course the FL {wide} fork and
front wheel. He then took the complete fork assy. off a
Sportster {a narrow one}, fender and wheel, which explains the
mismatch on the early 71 rims. He put a set of 3 1/2 gal. tanks,
still using the FL dash and then designed a fiberglass tail
section using a tailight from a 1965 Chevy Impala, probably a
pretty radical idea for HD. So now you have a big motor {74 cu
in} in a lighter so called performance bike, just like a
"Chopper".
I repainted it in it's original "Sparkling America" red, white
and blue theme. The bike did come in many different colors but
this one got all the attention. 5700 of the FX Super Glides were
made in 71 and this was the only year that they used the "Boat
Tail" rear section officially in production, 72 they went to a
Sporty style rear fender.
The bike performs pretty good , by 1971 standards anyway... The
brakes are terrible, anyone who's ridden one of these will
agree. But all in all its a Cool bike. At least once each time I
ride someone will croud me at a stop sign and and say "What The
Hell Is That", I just laugh and ride off. |
